Oven-Baked Cabbage Burgers offer a healthy and low-carb twist on classic burgers by using cabbage slices as the base instead of buns, combined with a flavorful ground beef mixture and melted cheese on top. This recipe is easy to prepare, perfect for those seeking a gluten-free, paleo-friendly, and delicious meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Cabbage Base

  • 1 small head of cabbage (cut into thick slices)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Burger Mixture

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg (optional, for binding)

Topping

  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Prepare Cabbage: Slice the cabbage into thick rounds, about ½-inch thick each. Brush both sides of the cabbage slices with olive oil and place them evenly on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Make Burger Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and the egg if using. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until well combined.
  4. Assemble Burgers: Take a handful of the meat mixture and press it onto each cabbage slice, evenly shaping it into a patty that covers the cabbage surface.
  5. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the cabbage burgers for 25 minutes to cook the meat through and soften the cabbage.
  6. Add Cheese and Broil: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle the shredded cheese over each burger. Switch your oven to broil and return the baking sheet for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  7. Serve and Garnish: Remove the burgers from the oven and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve immediately with sour cream, mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Using ground turkey reduces fat content and makes this recipe leaner.
  • The egg is optional but helps bind the meat mixture for better patty cohesion.
  • Feel free to experiment with different cheese types for varied flavors.
  • This recipe is gluten-free and low-carb, suitable for paleo and keto diets.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
