Ingredients

Scale

Steak

  • 2 pounds sirloin steak, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Sauce

  • ¼ cup bourbon
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Thickening Mixture (optional)

  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch

Garnish

  • fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Sear Steak: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, sear the steak bites in batches until browned on all sides. This step adds color and flavor but does not fully cook the steak.
  2. Transfer to Slow Cooker: Move the seared steak pieces to the slow cooker.
  3. Make the Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together bourbon, honey, ketchup, low-sodium soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Pour this mixture evenly over the steak in the slow cooker.
  4. Slow Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours, until the steak is fork-tender. Stir the mixture halfway through cooking if possible to evenly distribute flavors.
  5. Optional – Thicken the Sauce: Approximately 30 minutes before the cooking time ends, whisk together cornstarch and water. Stir this mixture into the slow cooker to thicken the sauce, then continue cooking.
  6. Serve: Serve the honey bourbon steak tips warm, garnished with freshly chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For a stronger bourbon flavor, you can slightly increase the bourbon quantity or add it towards the end of cooking.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control the saltiness of the dish.
  • Make sure to sear the steak in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which helps achieve better browning.
  • Adjust the brown sugar based on desired sweetness.
  • Serve this dish with rice, mashed potatoes, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • To make this dish gluten-free, ensure the soy sauce used is gluten-free.
